Search “argentina rentista visa” on September 28, 2026 and page one is a trade publication, a cluster of investment-migration consultancies and relocation agencies, a residency directory and a blog. None of them presents itself as a law firm, and there is no government page. “how to get residency in argentina” looks much the same. So does “portugal d7 visa requirements”.
The finding is plain. The informational layer of residency search is written by businesses that sell relocation, investment migration or content, and the lawyers who file the cases are mostly absent from it. Page one has learned to show a byline and a “last updated” line. It has not learned to show a lawyer admitted where the case is filed, or to date the facts rather than the page, and its numbers go stale within weeks. A firm that fixes those two things holds the cheapest advantage left in search, and the evidence on AI answers points the same way.
Who owns page one
Five searches run on September 28, 2026, read as a set, describe the market.
On “argentina rentista visa”, the results are a trade publication, six consultancies, agencies or advisory firms, a residency directory and a relocation blog. On “how to get residency in argentina”, consultancies again, an investment newsletter, a directory and one lawyer-branded site. On “argentina residency requirements 2026”, consultancies, a regional news site and Wikipedia. On “argentina citizenship by descent”, the primary sources finally appear: two Argentine consulate pages and the Wikipedia article on nationality law, beside an investment-migration firm and consultancies.
“immigration lawyer buenos aires” is the telling one. It returns a global corporate immigration firm’s local office page, one Buenos Aires law firm, a consultancy, two directories, and four Wikipedia biographies of Argentine public figures that have nothing to say about immigration. When a search engine pads a commercial query with unrelated biographies, it is telling you it lacks good pages to show.
None of this is a law of nature. On “spain non lucrative visa requirements 2026”, two Spanish consular pages and three law firms share page one. Where lawyers publish seriously, they rank.
The vacancy matters because of what a lawyer can do and a publisher cannot. In the UK, providing immigration advice or services without being qualified is a criminal offence (Immigration and Asylum Act 1999, section 91). In the US, the list of people who may represent an applicant before immigration authorities is short: attorneys, accredited representatives and a few others (8 CFR 292.1). Publishing a guide is not giving advice, so none of this keeps anyone off page one. It does mean the fact a reader most needs, that the author can take the case, never reaches the page unless the firm puts it there.
Every number on page one has an expiry date
Argentina’s migration service states the rentista requirement as income of at least five times the minimum living wage, the salario mínimo vital y móvil, and prints no peso or dollar figure (Argentina.gob.ar). Page one converts the rule for the reader, and the conversions disagree. Across the rentista guides on page one, the same rule appears as about USD 1,200 to 1,300, about USD 1,250, USD 1,500, USD 1,700 to 2,000 “as of 2025”, USD 2,000 and USD 1,500 to 2,500. One consultancy page, updated in August 2026, prints three different dollar figures in three sections.
The base moves every month. Argentina’s minimum wage was ARS 363,000 in May 2026 (El Cronista) and ARS 383,800 in September. Resolution 4/2026 raises it every month until it reaches ARS 437,000 in April 2027 (La Nación). Five times the September figure is ARS 1,919,000. A page that computed the threshold carefully in May was almost 6% behind in pesos by September, before anyone touched the exchange rate.
Legal citations age as well. Two page-one guides reviewed in August and September 2026 list Decree 70/2017 among the rules that govern the visa. Argentina repealed that decree in March 2021 (Decree 138/2021). A later decree, 366/2025, published on May 29, 2025, replaced a string of articles in the migration law (Boletín Oficial). A page can carry a fresh “last reviewed” date and still describe a system that no longer exists.
Portugal shows the same pattern with a cleaner number. Portuguese rules set the means of subsistence for a visa as a share of the national minimum wage, 100% for the first adult (Portaria 1563/2007, Ministry of Foreign Affairs). Page-one titles for the D7 visa therefore print “€920/month”, which is the 2026 minimum wage, up from €870 in 2025 (Government of Portugal). Each of those titles expires at the next raise unless someone edits it.
The pattern holds wherever a threshold is written as a multiple of something that moves.

A number without a date is a liability dressed as an answer.
The firm’s version of the same paragraph is easy to write and rare to find: the rule as the authority states it, the instrument that sets it, and the conversion with its date inside the sentence. Or no conversion, with the reason given in the same breath, because the threshold moves monthly and the file is judged on the day it is filed.
What Google has said, with dates
The tactics sold to law firms in the past three years have a short shelf life, and the record is public.
FAQ rich results were restricted to government and health sites in 2023 and stopped appearing in Google Search on May 7, 2026. The markup can stay on the page. The display is gone (Search Engine Journal).
The llms.txt file never became a lever. Google’s documentation now says such files are “not needed for Google Search (and won’t negatively or positively impact your visibility or rankings)” (Search Engine Roundtable, June 2026). Ahrefs studied 137,210 domains and found that of roughly 38,000 with a valid file, 97% saw no requests for it in May 2026. SE Ranking, looking at about 300,000 domains, found no measurable link between having the file and being cited in AI answers (Search Engine Journal, November 2025).
What remains is less exotic. To appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, “a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet”, and Google adds that “there are no additional technical requirements” (Google Search Central).
The rater guidelines, last updated September 11, 2025, give the test that decides how hard a page is judged: “Would a careful person seek out experts or highly trusted sources to prevent harm? Could even minor inaccuracies cause harm?” For a residency threshold the answer to both is yes. The same document calls trust “the most important member of the E-E-A-T family”. Google’s guidance for creators asks: “Is it self-evident to your visitors who authored your content? Do pages carry a byline, where one might be expected?”
Dead, unproven and alive, as of September 2026
- Dead: FAQ rich results, gone from Google Search since May 7, 2026.
- Unproven: llms.txt as a lever for Google rankings or AI citations.
- Alive: indexable text, a named and credentialed author, sourced claims, dates on the facts themselves.
- Measured: AI Overview and AI Mode impressions in Search Console, with no click data.
Why a name and a date travel into AI answers
When Google shows an AI summary, fewer people click through. Pew Research Center tracked 900 US adults in March 2025: they clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits with an AI summary and 15% without one, and clicked a source inside the summary on 1% of visits. On those searches, a firm’s best chance of being seen is inside the answer itself.
What gets quoted has been measured. In the GEO study that Pranjal Aggarwal and colleagues presented at KDD 2024, adding citations, quotations and statistics to a page raised its visibility in generative answers by up to 40%, while keyword stuffing offered “little to no improvement”.
A lifted passage travels without its footer. The sentence “As of September 2026, the rentista requires income of at least five times Argentina’s minimum wage, per the migration service” carries its date and its authority into any answer that quotes it. A page-level “updated” stamp stays behind. The same goes for the author: a byline that reads as a person, with the bar or college they are admitted to, gives a model and a reader something to attribute.
Measurement has only just arrived. Search Console’s generative AI reports went worldwide on August 31, 2026, covering impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover’s AI features, and at publication they carried no click data (Search Engine Journal). A firm can now see which guides show up in AI answers. It cannot yet see what that earns, and should not promise partners otherwise.
